Plant details
Native to Mo'orea, an island in French Polynesia, pothos is a trailing vine with glossy or satiny, heart-shaped leaves. This genus of about 15 species occurs from Southeast Asia to the western Pacific. All are climbers.
In tropical regions pothos is grown as a ground cover or as a scrambler up trees. Its leaves grow much bigger as they mature.
Plants produce adhesive aerial roots as they climb into the canopy, with clasping roots arising from nodes and internodes, and prolific feeding roots. The leaf stalks have a “knee” and sheathe the stem at the base.
It is very efficient at removing indoor pollutants such as formaldehyde, xylene, and benzene.
This fast-growing houseplant is perfect for beginners and seasoned indoor gardeners alike. Easy to care for and tolerant of many conditions, it looks beautiful trailing down from a bookcase or desk and can be trained up a trellis or across a wall to make a dramatic impact. Wrap around or tie to a trellis or gently lay the stems over nails or pushpins in the wall for support, if desired.
Selectively prune to keep vines a reasonable length and to promote new growth. Plants can be cut back to 2 inches from the soil line if necessary.
This plant is easily propagated from cuttings or by air-layering. The vines root in water or vermiculite within 3-4 weeks and buds can start to grow in 1-2 weeks under warm temperatures. It is best to plant several rooted cuttings together in a single pot. -
Care details
It likes a bright spot in the shade. A few feet away from a window is ideal but it's not fussy and will quickly adjust to a lower light environment.
It likes its soil moist and needs water roughly twice a week. More in the hot, summer months, less in the monsoon and cooler seasons.
It's strong, independent and takes care of itself.
