Plant details
Tradescantia Pallida commonly called Purple Heart is native to the gulf coast of eastern Mexico. It is a popular trailing houseplant that spreads out as it grows. It's considered to have a fairly fast rate of growth compared to other indoor plants.
Its delicate, long-jointed stems grow upwards and fall downwards to the ground. Stems and upper surfaces of the leaves are a deep purple with shades of a faint dusty turquoise that become darker as the foliage ages. It blooms in small clusters making small pink flowers that only stay open in the morning.
The name Tradescantia honours John Tradescant, an 17th century English naturalist. The species name pallida is from the Latin word 'pallidus' meaning "pallid" or "pale" in reference to the pale flowers of the species compared to other Tradescantia. -
Care details
It likes bright light with a bit of shade. Harsh direct sunlight scorches its leaves. It grows in the shade but its foliage becomes more green than purple.
It doesn't like too much water. About twice a week is usually sufficient.
Its leaves are delicate and should not be handled too roughly.
In reasonable conditions, it's strong and grows very quickly.
